Bowtows
‘Bowtows’ is term used when referring to people who were born in Newhaven, Edinburgh.
Today, Newhaven is known for its picturesque lighthouse, harbour and restaurants. Yet it was once a thriving fishing community of self-sufficient and hard-working people immortalised in the photography of Hill and Adamson. Newhaven was redeveloped in the 1960s and 1970s, yet, while the village changed, the heritage and collective memory of Bowtows remains.
This exhibit explores the shared identity of Bowtows by using a mixture of original work, people’s words and archival photos to reflect a sense of community and place.
