I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside

Kirkcaldy’s inception began at its port. A prominent importer and exporter of goods as early as the sixteen-hundreds, the town’s proximity to the sea provided a wealth of opportunity for its residents well into the twentieth century. ‘I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside’ is an exercise on what it means to be from Kirkcaldy- decades after its prosperous past has fizzled out. Existing in the space between the detritus of industry and modern life-as-normal, the imagery represents an effort to establish order within a landscape where there seems to be none. This personal undertaking in mindful observation in turn deepened photographer Adam Salmond’s relationship with his hometown, with appreciation for its rough edges and the quiet spaces in between.
